{"id":3329,"date":"2020-07-29T14:56:38","date_gmt":"2020-07-29T12:56:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lifebeware.eu\/?p=3329"},"modified":"2020-07-29T15:03:01","modified_gmt":"2020-07-29T13:03:01","slug":"a-talk-with-professor-lucia-bortolini-about-the-importance-of-educating-young-and-very-young-people-on-the-alteration-of-the-natural-water-cycle-and-the-effects-of-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lifebeware.eu\/en\/a-talk-with-professor-lucia-bortolini-about-the-importance-of-educating-young-and-very-young-people-on-the-alteration-of-the-natural-water-cycle-and-the-effects-of-climate-change\/","title":{"rendered":"A TALK WITH PROFESSOR LUCIA BORTOLINI ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATING YOUNG AND VERY YOUNG PEOPLE ON THE ALTERATION OF THE NATURAL WATER CYCLE AND THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p lang=\"it-IT\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Professor Lucia Bortolini <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">teaches<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> \u201c<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">I<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">rrigation and water management in green areas<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u201d<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> at the School of Agriculture of the University of Padua. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">On Friday 29<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">th<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> of May 2020, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Professor Lucia Bortolini <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">gave a lecture at the <\/span><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">&#8220;<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">BEWARE<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">Kids University<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-US\"><strong>&#8220;<\/strong>, the<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> virtual<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> training initiative organized in the context of the LIFE BEWARE Project, which involved<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">more than <\/span><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">500<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> children <\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-US\">and teachers from the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">primary<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">secondary<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> schools of Santorso and Marano Vicentino. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">The initiative represented a<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> pilot experience in which the importance of educating young <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">and very young <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">people about the effects of urbanization and climate change on the natural water cycle has emerged. Given the largely positive feedback, the event will be <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">replicated<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> at <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">national level in the autumn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"it-IT\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">Professor Bortolini, how exciting was it to give your lecture in front of a<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> very different<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> audience from your university<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> students<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">?<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p lang=\"it-IT\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Actually, it was not the first time I <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">lectured<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> young and very young people<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">. I had similar teaching experiences in the past <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">within the &#8220;Kids University&#8221; organized by the University of Padua. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Furthermore, when I was very young, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">I had the opportunity<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">to teach to 13-14 year<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">s<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> old high school students<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">for several years. So, let&#8217;s sa<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">y<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> that I<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> am <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">used to working with <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">younger students<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">. For me, however, it<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> is<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> always a thrill to <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">teach to<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">kids!<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"it-IT\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">How did you manage to capture so well and for so long <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">children\u2019s<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> attention on<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> such specific<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> issues?<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p lang=\"it-IT\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span lang=\"en-US\">I really hope I succeeded! Working<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">in the field of dissemination, especially <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">about irrigation<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, I am used to very different audiences and, as a result, I have to adapt the content and teaching methods to <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">those who attend my classes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"it-IT\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">What were the topics that <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">drew<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">attention<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> the most<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p lang=\"it-IT\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span lang=\"en-US\">I think<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">the<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> students were very interested in the<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> theme of water and its cycle<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, getting to understand <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">how fundamental this resource is <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">and, as <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the title of the lesson itself mentions, knowing where &#8220;the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">drops of water<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> go&#8221;. But <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">also,<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> the theme of climate change, intense rainy events and their impact on our cities has certainly received attention<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"it-IT\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">Do you think that<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> young people are more<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">sensitive and even more aware of the ecological issues and environmental phenomena than in the past? <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Do you think it is important to talk about these issues to younger people?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p lang=\"it-IT\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Sensitivity needs to be created<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, that is why the role<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> of <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">both <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">parents and teachers is important. Sensitivity to nature and the environment is inherent in people and therefo<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">re<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> also in children. Clearly, this attention must be <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">stimulated,<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> and I do not see why we should not talk about these issues at this age. Children are extremely receptive, and at that age everything you sow bears important fruit<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">s<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> in adulthood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"it-IT\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">How do you <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">evaluate<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u201cBEWARE <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Kids University<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u201d <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">experience?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p lang=\"it-IT\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span lang=\"en-US\">It was particularly interesting because there was a <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">larger<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">(virtual) <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">audience than <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the one we are<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> used to hosting in university classrooms<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">. In this way, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">we <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">understood<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> that it is possible to bring the message to a considerably larger number of people, in this case children and young people. The contact with University <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">teachers<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> is <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">fundamental because<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">people<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">can<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">learn from<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> those who, in addition to teaching, also do research and can offer more in-depth and updated skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"it-IT\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">Do you plan to repeat your <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">lecture<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p lang=\"it-IT\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Gi<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">ven the success of this first experience, it would certainly be interesting to <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">replicate <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">it <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">with<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> other students. I think it is important to <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">teach<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> such relevant topics to even the little ones.
